About 80% of Iranians have some kind of vitamin deficiency of whom 65-75% have mild to severe deficiencies in vitamin D, said Dr Mohammad Esmaeil Akbari, head of Cancer Research Center at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SUMS). Speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd international congress on gastrointestinal cancers on Wednesday at the university, he criticized the lack of insurance coverage for vitamin medications. “Insurance organizations should bring vitamins which are not expensive under coverage so that all people can have access to these essential medicines that help prevent dangerous diseases like MS and cancers,” IRNA reported.  Numerous epidemiologic studies have shown that higher intake or blood levels of vitamin D are associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancers.
