Cold Wave Catches Iranians by Surprise

The sudden drop in temperature in over 13 provinces of the country on Sunday that brought along with it hail and snow, trapped a number of people, prompting action from emergency services.

The worst affected provinces were Gilan, Mazandaran, Golestan, and Semnan where 900 people were rescued and provided relief services by 12 teams of 52 rescuers, news outlets reported on Monday.

Some 20 people were taken to safe places and six provided emergency shelter. Nearly 200 cars were pulled out of snow and those injured were taken to nearby medical facilities. The sudden temperature fall from 25 degrees to below 10 degrees also caused showers, drizzle, and snow in various parts of greater Tehran, which in the past two weeks had seen high levels of air pollution.
