A bus carrying Iranian pilgrims to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq for the Arba’een mourning rituals overturned in an accident on Tuesday evening, killing 28 people and injuring 12.

The accident took place on the Eqlid-Yasuj road in Eqlid city in Fars Province, as the bus was taking pilgrims from Yazd Province to Shalamcheh border with Iraq, various news outlets reported Wednesday.

Buses and other heavy vehicles are banned on the Eqlid road, listed by the Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization as dangerous due to its numerous sharp and unsafe turns. There was no official report on the actual cause of the accident.

Arba’een, which is one of the largest religious congregations in the world, is observed 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).
