A total of 17 medical stations have been set up at Iran-Iraq borders to accommodate the huge number of pilgrims who flock to the holy city of Karbala to take part in the Arbaeen rituals. The annual event this year which falls on November 20 marks the 40th day of Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). “There will be 235 ambulances and 16 medical emergency buses stationed in the vicinity of Shalamcheh, Chazzabeh, and Mehran borders,” said Dr. Hossein Kolivand, head of Relief and Rescue Department at the Iranian Red Crescent Society. He also said all 200 emergency stations across the country would be on standby to provide services if necessary. Last year (ended on March 19), nearly two million Iranian pilgrims visited Iraq to attend the Arba’een mourning ceremonies.
