People with various degrees of hearing loss constitute only 14% of the disabled population covered by the State Welfare Organization (SWO). However, 40% of the SWO budget for provision of rehabilitation devices to people with disabilities is spent on purchasing costly imported hearing aids, said Hossein Nahvinejad, SWO deputy of rehabilitation on Saturday. “Nearly all the required hearing aids are imported. We can reduce the high costs by increasing domestic production of hearing devices,” IRNA quoted him as saying. At present, new hearing aids are provided to hearing-impaired people once every three years, he added.
