Nearly 60% of the households under the coverage of the Imam Khomeini Relief Committee are headed by women.

“The committee’s approach towards households under its coverage is to empower them so that they can enter the economic production cycle and ultimately be withdrawn from the list of beneficiaries,” said Parviz Fattah, head of the IKRC on Monday, Mehr New Agency reported.

Lack of a comprehensive insurance system, high divorce rates, addiction, rural-urban migration, emergence of informal settlements, as well as unemployment are exacerbating poverty in the country.

The number of female-headed households has seen an upswing from 1.2 million in 1991 to 2.5 million in 2015, among whom over 50,000 are under the coverage of the committee.
