Based on recent statistics, 23% of the Iranian population suffers from osteoporosis and 30% in the 35-40 age group has already begun developing the disease, said Dr. Seyed Ahmad Raeesalsadat, a faculty member at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. “Prolonged use of corticosteroid medicines, smoking, severe emaciation and lack of timely treatment of conditions such as hyperthyroidism and kidney failure can also cause osteoporosis,” he said on the sidelines of the 4th National Conference on Skeletal and Muscular Diseases held October 21 in Sari, Mazandaran Province. The disease is most prevalent in Mazandaran, Golestan, Tehran, West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan, respectively, IRNA reported. Osteoporosis is a silent disease and may have no symptoms on the outset, but can make individuals highly prone to fractures after a minor fall or accidental bumps.
