An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook Zarand City in Kerman Province on Thursday afternoon, leaving 14 people injured. The earthquake was followed by three aftershocks, and several buildings are said to have sustained minor damages, ISNA reported. “The people were injured while trying to leave the buildings and were all transferred to medical facilities and are now safe and receiving treatment,” said the director general of the provincial Crisis Management Organization, IRNA reported. A large number of people evacuated their homes and set out tents and spent the night outdoors. One of the most earthquake prone regions of Iran, Kerman sits astride several major faults. The 2004 quake in Zarand claimed tens of lives and left many more injured.
