The number of addicts in Iran is not less than 2.5 million and if recreational drug users are taken into account the figure will increase to 4 million, said Ali Hashemi, chairman of the committee tasked with combating narcotics at the Expediency Council. The results of the new survey conducted jointly by the State Welfare Organization and Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters  will be published in the near future. It will provide more accurate data on drug users in the country, ISNA reported. The last official figures released in 2014 put the number of addicts at 1.5%-2% of the country’s population of 80 million.
