Iranian researchers at Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council have used Dracocephalum extract to synthesize nanoparticles that can be used in treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. “After the laboratory testing and studies, we found that these nanoparticles could be an appropriate option to inhibit acetylcholinesterase enzyme that causes Alzheimer’s,” said project manager Niloufar Dorosti, INIC website reported. Noting that the nanoparticles have considerably fewer side effects compared with other medicine in the market due to their organic nature, she said they also carry anti-cancer properties. The results of the research have been published in the International Journal of Applied Biomedicine. Dracocephalum is a genus of 60 to 70 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae.
