More Beds Needed for Mental Care

The rate of psychiatric disorders in the country is 23.6% covering a range of mild to severe conditions, according to director general of the social and psychological health and addiction department at the Health Ministry. “There are currently 9,100 hospital beds at psychiatric care centers across the country, but we need an additional 16,000 to provide quality services to the target population,” said Ahmad Hajabi, IRNA reported. He also said that depression is the most common psychological disorder in Iran with a 12.7% prevalence rate. Women are 1.5 to 2 times more prone to anxiety and depression.
