Based on research conducted under the Food and Agricultural Organization sub-regional project, on average, at least 375 kg of different foods is lost both in the supply chain and also through wastage by consumers every year, said Dr Zahra Abdollahi, head of Nutrition Office at the Health Ministry. “On average in each Iranian family, 25-50% of fruits and vegetables and 10% of rice are wasted,” SalametNews website quoted her as saying. Food can be wasted at any point throughout the entire supply chain. According to the FAO, every year in Iran at least 100,000 tons of red meat is lost in the supply chain.
