Around 1.2 million people with different kinds of disabilities are covered by the State Welfare Organization (SWO), of whom 14% suffer from hearing loss and other types of hearing impairment, said Hossein Nahvinejad, rehabilitation deputy at the SWO.

“Hearing aids so far have been provided free-of-charge to 30% of the affected people. This year (started March 20), the figure will be increased by 10%,” Alef News Agency quoted him as saying.

“Like in the previous years, workshops to increase awareness among mothers on the importance of early intervention in kids and use of hearing aids have been planned across the country,” he added.

Early intervention is extremely important in an infant or child who is deaf or hard of hearing. The human brain is programmed to learn language during the first six years of life and the first three years are the most critical.
