In the past decade, 70 adult day care centers were established across the capital Tehran under the supervision of the State Welfare Organization. Unfortunately, the number of such centers in recent times has dwindled and only two new centers have been established due to lack of funds for the purpose, said Dr Mahtab Alizadeh, geriatric medicine specialist and a board member of Elderly Health Research Center at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
The day care centers promote elderly people’s well-being through provision of social and health-related services, she said, the Persian language weekly ‘Salamat’ reported. “At present, there are more than 6 million people over the age of 60 living in Iran; however there are only 100-120 adult day care centers across the country,” she added.
