Smoking Ban to Be Enforced

Smoking will be banned in all enclosed public places as of Thursday, said director of the Iranian Anti Tobacco Association (IATA). “The ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces will come into force from September 22 across the country,” said Mohammadreza Masjedi, Khabaronline reported. The ban mandates all public places including traditional Iranian bistros and coffee shops to put up no smoking signs. Those violating the law will be fined 50 million rials ($1,500) for each violation. Regulations prohibiting use of cigarettes and other tobacco products in enclosed public places were ratified in 1998 but remain unenforced in most public places, in the absence of strict monitoring.
