Life expectancy at birth in Iran has surpassed the global average, said Deputy Health Minister for Research and Development Reza Malekzadeh.

“Life expectancy at birth is an important indicator of a country’s healthcare system and general wellbeing,” he was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying. At the moment, life expectancy is 76.3 years for men and 80.7 for women, up from an average of 52 years in 1970. The average life expectancy at birth worldwide is 71 years (68.6 for males and 73.6 for females) according to United Nations World Population Prospects.

Cardiovascular and non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of premature death (under 70 years of age) among Iranians.
