About 4.7 million tons of bakeries’ flour have been enriched with a powdery blend called ‘Premix’ which contains minerals including iron and folic acid, said the director general of inspection and supervision at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday.
“About 900 tons of Premix has been used in the flour fortification project,” IRNA quoted Behrouz Jannat as saying.
Food fortification is a cost-effective strategy to reduce prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies.
Iranians consume the highest bread per capita (160 kg per person) in the world after Turkey with 199 kg per person. European countries consume almost two or three times less. Per capita bread consumption is 56 kg and 70 kg in France and Germany, respectively.
