The rate of road accidents normally peaks during September, the last month of the holiday summer season. In only three days last year (September 17-20, 2015), a total of 1,300 major traffic accidents were reported in the country, causing 100 deaths and 1,700 injuries. The accident rates for the corresponding period of this year are yet to be announced. “About 21% of all traffic accidents happened between 4pm to 8pm,” said Colonel Ebrahim Vahabzadeh, deputy for traffic engineering at the Traffic Police organization, Alef News Agency reported.
The two main causes of road mishaps are sleep-deprivation (fatigue) and speeding limit (the cause of 39% of accidents), he said, asking motorists driving long distances to pull over and rest for ten minutes every two hours.
