The average daily calorie intake per capita is 2,644 kilocalories (kcal) in Iran, while the recommended calorie intake is 2,381 kcal, said Ali Akbar Sayyari, deputy minister of health on Saturday.
Sating that many Iranians suffer from Vitamin D deficiency, he said last year that ended in March, bread fortification with Vitamin D under a pilot plan was implemented by the National Nutrition And Food Technology Research Institute affiliated to Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Alef News Agency reported.
“The first phase of the flour fortification plan will be implemented across the country by the end of this year,” the official said.
Iranians consume the most bread per capita (160 kg per person) in the world after Turkey with 199 kg per person. European countries consume almost twice or three times less bread. Per capita bread consumption is 56 kg and 70 kg in France and Germany, respectively.
