After China, Iran has the second-highest rate of prescription medication abuse in Asia. Commonly abused classes of prescription drugs include opioids or painkillers, said Dr Hamid Khoyi, secretary of the Iranian Society of Clinical Pharmacists. He warned about the health complications associated with taking painkillers for extended periods of time and said, “They can harm the body’s endocrine system and also increase the risk of osteoporosis,” IRNA reported. The society’s 15th scientific conference will be held from August 25-27 at Tehran’s Razi International Conference Hall, and will focus on chronic pain management techniques.
