8th Farabi Int’l Award in Humanities

The 8th Farabi International Award will be held this year in autumn, and those interested have until September 1 to submit their works at the award’s online portal, said event secretary Hossein Mirzaei on Saturday.

Over 4,000 works from local and international writers, authors, translators and researchers, as well as universities, institutes, and scientific communities have been submitted to the award’s secretariat so far. Its permanent secretariat is located at the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies in Tehran.

The Farabi International Award is given annually by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in collaboration with UNESCO, ISESCO (Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Iran’s National Elites Foundation for outstanding achievements in research and innovation, in fields related to humanities. It was first awarded in 2008.

The purpose of the award is to recognize and introduce top research works in the humanities and Islamic Studies, specifically aimed at the development of potential and promotion of knowledge production, and build motivational and supportive capacities for research and innovation.

The event receives, reviews, and selects works in two age groups (under and over 25). It includes both theoretical and applied fields, and invites all scientific and research centers and universities to participate “in the comprehensive effort and collective action to identify and appreciate the selected works of humanities, Islamic studies, and Iranology,” the secretariat’s website ‘farabiaward.ir’ reported.

Mirzaei said around 35 winners are expected to receive awards this year.

The goals of the award are: paving the ground for knowledge production on Islamic and Iranian studies; introducing and strengthening the views regarding the role of humanities in the production of science and civilization-building in the Iranian society; creating a positive attitude towards humanities and leading and motivating young talents in this field both in the country and the Islamic world.

Helping explain the importance, function, and effective role of humanities in national and international planning and policymaking; identifying and introducing talents in the humanities, and encouraging scholars to produce indigenous knowledge in the area of the humanities in Iran and the Muslim world are the other objectives of the award.
