Every day eight people die from drug abuse, according to a report released by Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization.
Drug abuse is the second leading cause of disease burden among 18-30 year-old Iranian men, said Dr. Iraj Harirchi, deputy minister of health, at a press conference on Monday, the Persian-language newspaper ‘Donya-e Eqtesad’ reported.
“Nearly half of injection drug users (IDUs) are infected with hepatitis C virus and 14% are HIV-positive. Drug addiction is also responsible for 26.5% of divorces in the country,” he said.
