There are 450,000 blind and 90,000 visually impaired people at present in the country, said Dr Abbas Azimi, a board member of Iranian Optometric Association (IOA). Stating that cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision loss, he said Iran is among the top ranking countries in cataract treatment. “Around 6,000 surgeries per million per annum are performed as per data provided by the Health Ministry,” Alef News Agency reported. He called for implementation of screening for cataract across the country pointing out that many people, who are not aware their eye condition can be treated by a simple surgery, lose their vision every year.
