There are currently 21,000 prisoners in Tehran Province jails of whom 3% are women, said Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, Tehran prosecutor general. Nearly 580 among them are languishing in jail “for involuntary or unintentional crime” and most of have been sentenced to pay a cash fine of less than $2,900 (100 million rials) for release,” Alef News Agency reported. He urged judges to address the problems of the inmates by suggesting alternative sentences if they can’t pay the cash penalties.
