The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) acknowledged the role of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in helping and rescuing those trapped in the recent snowstorms across the country. The IFRC website quoted Dr. Naser Charkhsaz as saying ‘’rescue and humanitarian workers have provided services to those trapped in the snow when the storm hit different parts of the country in the last week of October.’’  IRCS representative Hussein Derakhshan also said ‘’more than 2,000 people were evacuated in 11 provinces due to the heavy snowfalls and blizzards.’’

Nearly 500 people received temporary emergency shelter while six persons were transferred to nearby medical centers, IRCS sources added.

The October snow was ten centimeters thick in some regions. The IRCS teams are on full alert and prepared to meet any contingency as the country is known for its harsh and stormy winters.

In February 2014, thousands of people were left in dire need as a record-breaking snowstorm hit 26 provinces. IRCS volunteers then reached out to more than 11,000 people, providing them with shelter, food, medicines and medical supplies.
