About 30% of children in Iran are obese, said the head of epidemiology at the Health Ministry’s endocrinology research center. “Physical activity has dramatically declined among today’s children, and fattening junk food has replaced nutritious healthy foods,” Davood Khalili told IRNA. The obesity rate is alarming, and the next generation of Iranians will struggle with numerous chronic diseases and physical disorders if responsible bodies and families do not take immediate action, he warned. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults (18 years and older) and 41 million children (under the age of 5) were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese. Over 60% of adults in Iran are either overweight or obese, and it is more prevalent among women (over 30%).
