Treating burn injuries is costly and even low-intensity treatment for every 1% of the total skin surface area can cost anywhere from $600 to $1500; therefore the best way is prevention and 90% of burns are preventable, said Dr Mohammad Javad Fatemi, head of the Iranian Burns Association. Around 200,000 burn injuries occur in the country and 30,000 patients with severe injuries are hospitalized each year, he said, Alef News Agency reported. He criticized lack of insurance coverage for victims of burn injuries and said that fatalities are more common among people from the economically weaker sections.
