Every month 50 to 60 children under the age of 6 are sent to the state welfare centers in Tehran Province, of whom 30% are unidentified, said Ahmad Delbari, director general of the provincial office of the State Welfare Organization (SWO). “At present, the demand for adoption of the girls less than 2 years of age is higher,” ISNA quoted him as saying. Delbari also said that currently 1,500 families in Tehran are on the centers’ waiting lists. In the last Iranian calendar year that ended in March, 300 children were given for permanent adoption to applicants.
