Since the year 2001 no new incidence of polio infections have been registered in the country, said Mohammad Mahdi Guya, head of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the Health Ministry on Monday. “Despite polio cases in neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, where the disease has not yet been eradicated, Iran has been successful in eliminating the polio virus,” IRNA quoted him as saying. The last 3 cases of polio in Iran were reported in 2002 in Chabahar County, Sistan-Baluchestan Province after which polio vaccination coverage increased to more than 97% in the country. Polio vaccination is administered to all children, including illegal migrants, he said.
