Two people were killed and dozens severely injured following a fire in a residential building in Shurik village in Safayyeh District of Khoy County, West Azarbaijan Province, on Saturday. The blaze was followed by a gas cylinder explosion which increased the number of casualties to 24, as several people had gathered near the area to help put out the flames, ISNA reported. A special aircraft was sent to transfer the victims to hospitals in Tehran and Isfahan. The injured were initially hospitalized in Khoy, Urmia, and Tabriz. Amin Saberinia, head of Iran’s Emergency Medical Service, said the two victims lost their lives within hours after the incident due to severe burns (over 90%).
