Mefdi Mahdavikia and Farhad Zarif, two sport celebrities and health ambassadors to promote awareness on World Diabetes Day (November14), in a letter to the ministry of education urged more attention to physical activity and sports in schools. The two star players highlighted the effectiveness of physical activity in fighting diseases like diabetes. In their letter, Mahdavikia and Zarif expressed concern over the “tsunami of diabetes’’ and blamed ‘’junk food’’ and ‘’sedentary behavior’’ for the disease. ‘’One of the most effective ways to tackle obesity is physical activity and therefore we demand that due attention be given to sports and morning exercise in schools,’’ the letter said. There are over 6 million diabetic patients in the country.
