A total of 15,000 tons of leftover food is thrown out every day in the capital city of Tehran, said managing director of social services at Tehran Municipality.
“Tehran city alone consumes a huge quantity of meat (from 6,000 sheep and cattle on a daily basis), and people spend substantial amounts on fast food. A great part of this is normally wasted and can be donated to the poor,” said Farzad Houshyar, quoted by Mehr News Agency.
He said people can call the new hotline 4370 for municipal teams to pick up the extra amount of leftover food from families for distribution among the needy identified by the municipality.
Since launching of the hotline, 37,000 food packages have been supplied to the poor, and the number is expected to surpass 125,000 by the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
