Torrential rains that started on Saturday continue to lash more cities and rural areas in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

The flooding that claimed two lives in Mianeh County has seen the displacement of residents of over 10 cities and villages including Tabriz, Haris and Shabestar. They have been given emergency shelter, ISNA reported.

“The relief and rescue teams have doubled and relief operations are reaching out to over 700 people in distress across the province,” said Seyed Mostafa Mortazavi, spokesperson for Relief and Rescue Operations at the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

The heavy rains and hailstorm also caused some 300 livestock to perish, and landslides and overflowing streams closed several roads linking provincial towns.
