During the first month of the current year that started in March, around 121 women in Tehran made a request for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP). The figure represents an increase by 12% compared to the same period last year. According to Tehran’s Central Forensic Medicine, permission for termination was granted in 77 cases, IRNA reported. Legal permission for MTP is granted on two grounds: fetal abnormality and existence of threat to mother’s life. Valid genetic testing, written consent of mother, gestational period of less than 19 weeks of the fetus, besides approval by three medical specialists is mandatory for therapeutic abortion.
