The traffic police in Iran are ensuring that drivers are fined $9 for litter thrown from their vehicles – even if their passengers are to blame. “The law was passed earlier but has recently come into effect,” head of Tehran’s traffic police Brigadier General Teymour Hosseini, told ISNA. “Under the law, traffic police have the authority to fine the drivers if they or their car passengers are caught throwing trash out of the vehicle.” The police have been instructed to note the number plates of ‘offending’ vehicles or gather evidence via CCTV cameras, and send tickets to the car’s registered owner.
