Over three tons of illicit drugs were seized in Sistan-Baluchistan Province in the past three weeks, said Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Roham-Bakhsh Habibi. “In several anti-narcotics operations in which some smugglers were killed and the remaining arrested, a total of 3.5 tons of narcotics were seized,” he was quoted by MNA as saying. The haul included opium, morphine, heroin, crack, and hash. Close to 450 illegal trespassers, including one human trafficker, attempting to cross into the country from across the borders, were arrested. Iran, which has a 900 km border with Afghanistan in the southeastern Province, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling drugs. Iran routinely launches large-scale operations against the illegal drugs smuggled from war-ravaged Afghanistan bound for Europe and the US, accounting for 40% of the global seizures.
