The rate of literacy among Afghan refugees in Iran has increased from 6% to more than 62% over the past 30 years, said Ali Baqerzadeh, head of the Literacy Movement Organization. “Some 700,000 Afghans have been provided services by the LMO during the period,” he said, at a joint meeting on Tuesday with Mohammad Rahimi, Afghan deputy minister of education, IRNA reported. The refugees who have entered the country over the past decade had low levels of literacy and education, whereas in the early years after the Afghan conflicts began in the late 1970s, when the refugee influx was at its peak, they were mostly educated Afghans.
