The annual per capita consumption of seafood in Iran is 10 kg as against the global per capita fish consumption of more than 20 kg, said Hassan Salehi, head of the Fisheries Organization. “The consumption rate is also low at only 14 kg in the northern Mazandaran Province bordering the Caspian Sea, while the average rate of fish consumption is 40 kg in other coastal cities of the world,” Alef News Agency quoted him as saying. Fish consumption is highest in the western industrialized countries. Pointing to the success of trout production in Iran, he said, the annual domestic production is 140,000 tons, which is 17% of the global production.
