20 New GM Crops

Twenty new genetically modified seeds were unveiled by the Seed and Plant Improvement Research Institute (SPII), at a ceremony on Tuesday in Karaj, Alborz Province, said Gudarz Najafian, director general of the institute. “The genetically modified plant species include wheat, cotton, sugar beet, barely, spruce and seeds of some other fruits and legumes,” the Iranian Agriculture News Agency (IANA) quoted him as saying. First Vice President Ishaq Jahangiri and Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Hojjati were present at the ceremony. Genetically modified crops are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified.
