While the number of drug addicts in the country is often put at 1.3 million by the Iran Drug Control Headquarters, it should be revised “as it is way above this figure,”  and likely around 2 million, according to Saeed Sefatian, head of the working group on Drug Demand Reduction at the Expediency Council.

“The exact figures of drug addicts in the country, including those who are married, employed or unemployed, and the number who have been covered by rehab services are not available,” IRNA quoted him as saying.

The Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has stressed the need to control social harms, in particular addiction, several times in the past few months, he recalled. “To be able to fight substance abuse we need accurate information about drug abusers.”
