A data center for registering genetic diseases and physical disabilities in infants has started operations at the Health Ministry’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Hospitals are obliged to register and transfer information on genetic complications and disabilities in newborns to the NICU, Parisa Mohaqeqi, the unit’s director was quoted as saying by IRNA.

“The data base will be ready for analytical use by the end of the current year in March 2017. The results of analysis will be useful for physicians during health monitoring schemes for newborns,” she said.

Phenylketonuria (PKU), thalassemia and hemophilia are the most frequent genetic diseases among children in Iran.
