An estimated 40% to 46% of inmates return to prisons after their release for recommitting offences, said Asghar Jahangir, head of the State Prison Organization. Effective measures should be taken to prevent their return to prisons. “In the past 3 years, we have discussed plans to create sustainable jobs for inmates in jails but this will require more funding. Currently, only 10-20% of the prisoners earn money by working in a jail job,” Jahangir said, Alef News Agency reported. Nearly 43% of the 210,672 prisoners in the country are serving sentences for drug abuse.
