The 56th Exhibition and Congress of Iranian Dental Association (EXCIDA 56) opened on Tuesday with 9,000 local and foreign attendees, including 300 guests from 18 countries, at Tehran Summit Hall.

“The Islamic Republic’s advancements in the dental industry is highly satisfactory vis-à-vis global standards, and the presence of Iranian dental doctors in the most prestigious scientific institutes and medical centers across the world is proof of this,” Dr. Patrick Hescot, president of the World Dental Federation (FDI), told IRNA on the sidelines of the four-day event.

EXCIDA is the leading dental congress and exhibition held annually in Iran, and a special event in the Middle East and Central Asia as it brings together leaders in dental practice, research and industry. It is held this year in conjunction with the First FDI Regional Congress and 34th ICOI (International Congress of Oral Implantologists) World Congress.

Noting Iran’s scientific and medical progress, including in dentistry, he said the congress is an opportunity for Iran to showcase its dental industry and to build closer ties to the FDI.

“As of last year, the Health Ministry has given exceptional attention to oral health and hygiene,” ISNA quoted Dr. Ali Tajernia, head of the conclave, as saying.

“Establishment of the Oral Health Council at the ministry and launching dental screening programs in schools and for pregnant mothers are two of the most important steps in oral hygiene promotion.”

Nearly 40% of the people seek tooth extraction on their first visit to a dentist indicating lack of timely attention to oral hygiene, he noted.

Taking stock of the high cost of dental care in Iran, Tajernia stressed the need to use global experience as well as government support in devising guidelines with regards to tariffs in dental treatment to promote good oral health.

The president of the Medical Council of Iran Dr. Alireza Zali, said the domestic dentistry sector needs innovation and development “given the constant progress in the field on the global scene.”

There are 100 scientific panel discussions and 400 keynote speeches besides an extensive exhibition and more than 50 workshops will offer participants a vast range of dental services and products through prominent companies.
