The Royan Stem Cells Technologies Institute has created capacity to save 100,000 samples of umbilical cord blood in its cord blood bank, said Dr Morteza Zarrabi, managing director of the institute. “So far, more than 5,000 samples of umbilical cord blood have been stored in the institute’s public bank and over 60,000 samples in its private bank,” ISNA quoted him as saying.   Last year (ended March 19), umbilical cord blood which is rich in stem cells -- cells that have the ability to transform into just about any human cell -- was used for the treatment of 15 patients suffering from thalasemia and other blood diseases in the country, and the success rate of the treatment was 80%, he said.
