From the beginning of the next school year on September 23, anti-tobacco programs and services including medical treatment and psychological counseling will be provided to students and professors in all universities, said Hamid Yaghubi, head of Health Counseling of the Student Affairs Organization at the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

The program is a part of the ‘Tobacco-Free Universities Initiative’ which is currently under development and will be implemented later this year, Alef News Agency reported.

Smoking is the leading cause of 90% of respiratory diseases, 80% of chronic bronchitis and 25% of all health complications in the country.

According to a recent survey, only 10% of Iranian university students have never smoked.
