More than 1.5 million people comprising 2% of the population suffer from some form of severe disability, said Dr Hossein Nahvinezhad, deputy for rehabilitation services at the State Welfare Organization.
“While 1.3 million are registered at the SWO, we are making efforts to identify all people with disabilities by improving our screening coverage,” he said.
Last year, $188 million was allocated for provision of rehabilitation services to those registered with the SWO.
“For the first time screening for autism will also be implemented across the country in the current Iranian year (started March 20),” he said, Mehr News Agency reported.
Currently, the coverage for vision and hearing screening is 80% and 65%, respectively.
