A total of 7.5 million smart national ID cards have been issued so far and another 15 million will be issued by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2017, said Mohammad Ebrahim Tarighat, spokesperson of the National Organization for Civil Registration
“The existing national ID cards are valid until the yearend, he said, IRNA reported.
So far, smart ID cards have been issued to people getting their cards for the first time or those who have lost their old cards and need to get new ones.
The smart cards have information regarding the holder’s identity, including name, family name, date and place of birth, photo and biometric data (fingerprints).
The new cards are part of the e-governance programs to help ensure that services reach people in an easier, faster and efficient way. People should pay 172,000 rials ($5) for the news ID cards.
