Hundred heart transplants are performed annually in the country, a significant increase over the last decade, said Dr Mohammad Hossein Mandegar, a board member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. “Today, thanks to modern techniques in heart transplant, the surgeries are far more successful and the survival rate has seen a marked improvement,” the Persian language weekly ‘Salamat’ quoted him as saying. There are six heart transplant centers in the capital at present. Medical university hospitals in bigger cities including Tabriz, Mashhad, Isfahan and Shiraz perform the surgery as well. The surgery costs between $23,000 and $26,000.
