Seven patients in need of lung transplant die each day due to delays in receiving the organ, said Katayoun Najafizadeh, head of the Iran Transplant Organ Procurement (Iran-TOP). She noted that referrals in 70% of the lung transplantation cases are unduly delayed, “which hinders the chances of a successful surgical procedure.” In her words, “70 patients out of the 100 waiting lung transplantation suffer due to the inordinate procedural delays,” IRNA reported. During the last Iranian year that ended on March 19, more than 810 organ transplants were conducted of which only 16 were lung transplants.
