The State Welfare Organization has integrated Childhood Autism Spectrum Tests in its screening programs for genetic disorders, said Habibollah Masoudi Farid, social deputy at the SWO. “Prevention of congenital disabilities is high on the SWO agenda,” he said at a seminar at Tehran’s Milad Tower, Sepidonline.com reported. Prevalence of autism is on the rise with some studies suggesting an increase in the rate by10% to 17% annually in the past several years. Noting that there are 1,000 genetic counseling centers operating across the country, Masoudi Farid said Pediatric Amblyopia Vision (lazy eye) testing has reached 90% coverage in the country. Hearing checks are at 75% but expected to reach full coverage in the current Iranian year that started on March 20.
